Well, here we go. Another blog that goes hand-in-hand with our interactive devotional. Which, by the way, has gotten over 500 downloads. That’s good news folks, and let me tell you why; that’s 500 people staring in the face of brokenness and saying that while their story has been hard and confusing, God is still willing and able to do something incredible through them.
I remember being in middle school, going to cheerleading camp (shout out to those golden eagles) and lying about my story. I remember talking about my lavish lifestyle, telling people that we had money and that I could do things that honestly I really couldn’t. You see, my mom was disabled, she had had a stroke when I was in elementary school and while she had an incredible job at the hospital before then, she could no longer could work after then. My dad didn’t have a high school diploma, and worked his tail off to provide for our family. Which means that he wasn’t there as much as we needed our dad to be. But, that wasn’t the case for a whole bunch of the other girls on the cheerleading team. They had money, their families went on really cool vacations, went to the park together and I felt like my story just wasn’t worthy of their friendship.
Why, you ask?
Well, it wasn’t pretty! My story didn’t have the beautiful and perfect details as theirs.
Often times our stories have a lingering trail of guilt and shame, right? We feel like if people saw the real us, the broken us, the us that’s crying in our bed at night because things just seem to keep falling apart, they wouldn’t accept us.
But, what if I told you that the same God that’s looking you in the face and saying, “While the world says you have to be perfect to be used, I am saying that I will use you right in the middle of your mess.” is also the same God that will provide you with a community of people that love you and except you for you. And I mean you! All your mess, all of your baggage and all of your broken stuff!
My husband Sam has this incredible ministry called A Greater Story. Now, if you’re reading this I’m sure you’re like, “oh goodness! Shameless plug!” Well, you’re right folks! I love that man! LOL But, honestly A Greater Story really is one of the most life-changing things I’ve been able to see and be a part of. Sam has taken this concept of owning your story to a whole nother level. Instead of saying that your story is a standalone broken isolated thing that can’t be fixed, Sam encourages people to give God access to their stories. It’s this idea that while our stories are beautiful, God’s story for us and the things that He is trying to write in our lives is greater than that. Because, when you lay your broken pieces into the hands of The Creator of the universe, He can take it and make something beautiful and great out of it. It’s so available for you, for me, for this entire world. “Because, when your story connects to God’s story it leads to a Greater Story.”
So, would you do me a favor and stop hiding behind your broken story? Would you do yourself a favor and own that thang? Would you just try to let God into your story so that He can take all of that stuff that you’re carrying around and make something beautiful of it?
